HCMS STEAM Team

We strive to develop a passion for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) in ourselves and in those around us, through participation in competitive STEAM events, leadership training and community service.

AUVSI PATHFINDER CONFERENCE

In August we were invited to present our team's story and receive a grant at the AUVSI Thafinder conference. We look forward to combining this grant with other donations to pruchase training drones for our 2026-27 season. We also met a JROTC team from Mississippi who will help us learn the ropes of drone racing. Thank you, AUVSI Pathfinder, for supporting our growth.

We look forward to competing in the MS Drone Technology Challenge at Technology Student Association SLC

ACE Leadership Training

Our STEAM officers traveled to Florence in early September to join 200 other Alabama Student Leaders from all the Alabama CTSO’s (Career Technical Student Organizations). Through the day we learned tips for introducing ourselves and organizing effective meetings. We also enjoyed encountering STEAM alumni who now lead CTSOs at 3 other high schools.

We look forward to a strong TSA season learning leadership and business skills to pair with our technical skills.

nEW MEMBERS

We met 40 STEAM enthusiasts at our August open-house sessions. So far 7 have applied to level up to our STEAM competition team, 5 will stick with us as Saturday STEAM Explorers, and we hope to take on 7 more new competing team members in October.

Onboarding has begun with learning the EDP and reviewing criteria and constraints for all our competetive events.

FTC RObotics Kickoff

The Tropic-Bulls trekked out to the Kevin Dukes Career Academy in Hollywood, AL get the inside story on the BIOBUZZ season. We got a sneak preview of the game field and heard from experienced FTC competitors about participating in Premier events and making our Engineering Portfolio shine in judging. We're hard at work now, brainstorming new robot design ideas to transport speherical objects in this year's challenge.

CFD Research Tour

On Saturday, September 12, STEAM Team toured the CFD Research Lab in Hollywood AL. We enjoyed seeing fancy machinging equipment; precision measuring equipment operating on air bearings; hypersonic wind tunnels; and videos of liquid and combustion fuel combusion. combustion. Special thanks to the Starck and Singhal families for arranging this opportunity, and the staff who came in on Saturday for showing such hospitality!
